SOOJIN SUH & COLORIS TRIO
Korean jazz drummer and composer Soojin Suh leads the Coloris Trio, which includes bassist Hoo Kim and pianist Jaehun Kang, showcasing an innovative musical realm beyond the traditional jazz trio framework. Drawing from her experience in classical, jazz, and traditional Korean music, Soojin Suh crafts a cinematic and intimate soundscape.
While keeping improvisation at the core, Coloris Trio weaves a distinctive soundscape that presents an immersive and sensory musical experience not easily found elsewhere. Soojin Suh expands the roles of each instrument and musician across composition, arrangement, and performance, creating a stark contrast to the conventional approach of piano trios. Their music, characterized by its ever-changing, prism-like colors, allows for diverse interpretations—sometimes standing alone in brilliance, at other times blending seamlessly—offering an array of musical experiences to listeners seeking something new.
"Colorist" signifies "one who adds color," capturing the collaborative process through which the three musicians contribute their individual musical shades to create a unified work. In tracks like "Jung Ak" and "On The Hill," minimal ambient elements are enhanced by lyrical Arco playing, while in "Stream Of Consciousness" and "Brice Wassy," the trio’s improvisation over rhythm-centered compositions introduces a fresh trio sound. By employing ambient soundscapes and layered textures, the Coloris Trio conveys a unique aesthetic, exploring new possibilities within Korean jazz.
